Remedies, herbs, spells, charms, edible wild greens, and more
ATHENS 2008
Five thousand years ago, herbs were used against diseases. In 2700 BC, a list of 365 medicinal plants was recorded in China. Hammurabi, king of the Babylonians in the 17th century BC, also compiled a list of medicinal plants.
In ancient Egypt, medicine first took on scientific dimensions. However, it was still largely a tool in the hands of the priesthood and often mixed with magic. The Greek Cyron, teacher of the later deified Asclepius, introduced the development of the therapeutic use of herbs to Greece.
The first in the world to separate medicine from magic and the influence of the priesthood was the Greek Hippocrates, recognized as the father of medicine.
