“The past of a people is the foundation upon which their present and future are built. Paul Kruger, leader of the Boers, used to say to his followers: “Whoever wishes to create a future must not, even for a moment, take their eyes off the past.” Our past must teach us, guide us, and inspire us. It is our roots — and just like a tree, a people remain standing because of their roots, drawing from them the strength needed for survival and progress. It is through our roots that we remain connected to our historical and cultural heritage: our language, our faith, our customs, and our traditions. Our folk wisdom, whether expressed through poetry or proverbs, offers guidance, direction, and messages. It provides us with historical, folkloric, literary, and linguistic elements — even though it often originates from people completely unschooled, yet profoundly wise.”
