A FEW WORDS ABOUT KANAKIS
A FEW WORDS ABOUT HIS WORK
Explore the collection of works by self-taught creator Kanakis Geronymakis, which includes 24 books, over 50 paintings, countless sketches, and traditional mantinades (Cretan couplets).
Each piece is a memory from his childhood or life experiences. Having lived through wars, occupation, and landmark events of modern Greek history, in the province of Sfakia where he resided, he became a keen observer and narrator of those times. His main purpose was to preserve our cultural traditions and heritage. Recognizing the need to protect the customs and values of our ancestors from the erosion of time and the fast pace of modern life, he strived to document all the knowledge he carried—through his writings, paintings, and mantinades—leaving behind a valuable legacy for future generations. Kanakis Geronymakis, through his unique and self-taught techniques, blends colors and emotions to narrate the past in his own distinctive way. His work is received with love and gratitude, as it has significantly contributed to the preservation and promotion of Greek cultural heritage. His research has shaped the modern understanding of Greek folk tradition, and he has been honored twice by the Academy of Athens.
Kanakis Geronymakis brings to life a wide range of themes—family moments, daily routines, childhood games, traditional professions, agricultural life, and construction practices—offering the viewer an opportunity to rediscover the lives, customs, habits, and traditions of our ancestors.

A vast collection of rizitika songs, poems, and mantinades…
My first stimulus in the field of our cultural heritage came when I began recording certain proverbs, expressions, and even words that I noticed were gradually disappearing from everyday speech in the Cretan countryside.
