This is because it has always been a distinct geographical unit, surrounded and isolated by the nearby mountains from the neighboring areas. Thus, the limited contact with other Cretans, different occupations, distinct lifestyle, unique natural environment, and the absence of permanent occupation by conquerors in Sfakia all contributed to the formation of these important peculiarities.
