Christ, if only the dream I saw tonight would fade away…
I saw my lover as a hunter, my husband as the hunted beast.
They would “lock” the hands behind the back and load the stones onto him.
A small wooden board was secured with ropes, and they’d pile the stones on top.
The large stones were carried on the “nómos” (shoulder).
When it came to patching shoes, they used strips of goat leather as thread for stitching.
When someone lost something valuable from his house, he could order the parish priest to tell the congregation on Sunday that he had suffered this damage. Whoever did it should know that the next Sunday if he did not return what he took or pay for it, he would raise a stone.
The “mantakoi” are ticks that torment sheep and other animals. Especially the sheep, not only do they weaken them, but they can also lead them to death. The tick doesn’t have a large body, but its stomach, when filled with blood, can grow to the size of a bean.
